Graduate students in EPSS are responsible for the timely scheduling of examinations as they proceed through to the degree.

  1. The student contacts the EPSS Advising Office prior to any of the following:
    • Scheduling the first departmental exam
    • Nomination of the Masters committee
    • Nomination of the Doctoral committee
    • Scheduling the University Oral Qualifying Exam
    • Scheduling the Final Defense
  2. Once the faculty members agree to participate on the committee for an upcoming exam, and at such time that any required approval of a committee has been granted by the UCLA Graduate Division, the student schedules the exam on a date and at a time when all committee members are available for a minimum of three hours.
  3. Upon receiving written confirmation of availability from all members of the committee, the student sends an email to to request a room for the exam.
  4. Upon receiving written confirmation of room booking, the student notifies all committee members of the location, date, and time of the exam. The email will be copied to the EPSS Advising Office (
  5. The student shall send a reminder email to the committee, with copy to the EPSS Advising Office, no later than one day prior to the day of the exam.
  6. In the case of the final defense of the dissertation work, the Ph.D. candidate shall also send an email to the EPSS Advising Office no later than two weeks prior to the date of the exam, and include the final title of the dissertation work. The announcement will then be sent to the Department regarding the upcoming defense.
