New World Luminescence Dating Workshop

at UCLA in West Los Angeles, California, Sept 6 – 9, 2012

Dates: Thursday Sept 6 2012 to Saturday Sept 8, with an all-day fieldtrip on Sunday Sept 9, 2012. Our plan is to have an introductory workshop on Thursday morning covering the basics of luminescence dating for the uninitiated (e.g. new students, interested potential users), and start the workshop proper in the afternoon, with talks continuing through Friday and Saturday. Posters will be displayed throughout, or for part of the meeting if we have a large number submitted. At this time of year we are able to make use of UCLA teaching rooms, equipment and accommodation at special rates, and keep costs to a minimum, and the weather is typically warm and sunny

Registration will be via a single secure on-line procedure, and will be located via a link on our workshop website http://www.ess.ucla.edu/luminescence. This will be active for registration and credit-card payments around the start of July. We have revised our initial cost estimates downwards, and these will be $80 for students and $150 for professionals, with one day registration for $80. We will update our webpage with relevant information, and this will later have a link to registration and card payment facilities and receipt generation. Below, we describe the options that will be available to you, and the full costs of each of these. Meanwhile, please send any enquiries to Ed Rhodes, Earth and Space Sciences, UCLA (erhodes@ess.ucla.edu). We will host a conference dinner on Friday night (Sept. 7) at a cost of $45 per head

We are now able to accept abstracts of oral or poster presentations for the meeting. These should be restricted to a single letter page size, and include the following information: Title, Authors (e.g. Rhodes, Ed J., etc), Authors’ affiliations and email addresses (email optional but encouraged), Abstract text, Figure or Table (optional), References cited (optional). Please use a 12 point font size for the main text, and 10 point for the affiliations and references. Please make it clear whether you would prefer an oral or poster presentation, and email these to Ed Rhodes (erhodes@ess.ucla.edu) as a word or plain text document, so that they can be edited if necessary, by August 15. We will select oral presentations (15 minutes plus 5 mins discussion) to provide a wide range of topics, and hope to include as many student talks as possible. Poster boards are 4’ x 4’, so please stay within these dimensions

Travel It should be possible to fly in Thursday morning and stay 2, 3 or 4 nights. (LAX is around 25-30 mins. away by cab, and there is a “Westwood Flyaway” bus to UCLA every hour on the hour for $10). Other travel options include Burbank and Long Beach airports, though these are further from UCLA

Accommodation: Accommodation options in UCLA housing are shared twin rooms (i.e. two people sharing) for $70 each person per night including breakfast, and single rooms for $120 per night (breakfast included for both). On the registration form, you will be able to select 2, 3 or 4 nights in these. Note that Sunday night (Sept. 9) accommodation in these UCLA rooms is not available. On the registration form, please tell us the full name of the person that you would like to share with for the twin rooms, but please both people complete the booking individually. If you would like a place in a shared room, but don’t have someone to share with, we can allocate these, so please tell us whether you are male or female. Double room: air-conditioning, cable TV, high-speed Internet connections, in room-telephone, twin beds, shared bathroom with other suite; daily housekeeping. There will be a one-day field trip following the meeting, on Sunday Sept. 9, cost $40 including packed lunch. We plan to go and visit the San Andreas fault where it is well exposed at the margin of the Mojave Desert, visit Vasques Rocks (scenic/geologic location, often in films such as Star Trek), have an over-view of the Santa Monica Mountains (MASH), and finish up on the beach at Point Dume (The Big Lebowski, Baywatch...). We will discuss issues relating to luminescence dating, in particular geologic considerations and environmental bleaching controls. We will aim to get at least one minivan back to LAX by 4pm for anyone flying out Sunday evening.

Other matters of interest: There are many things for families to do nearby (beach, mountains, Hollywood, Disneyland, Universal Studios etc), so you might want to tack on a few extra days and family members! Also, don’t forget the excellent Page Museum at the La Brea tar pits (30 mins by bus from UCLA) with their exceptional Pleistocene mammals.
