Undergraduate Research Awards Announced

EPSS is proud to announce recipients of its 2017 Spring and Summer Undergraduate Research Awards. These awards are made possible by gifts from alumni and friends of the department.

  • Two undergraduates are benefitting from the Straus Family Fund for Undergraduate Opportunity. Emmons McKinney will work with Prof. Seulgi Moon to perform a drone-based photogrammetric survey and construct 3D elevation models to quantify the movement of an active landslide. Ernest Gomis will work with Profs. Abby Kavner and Jon Aurnou to design and build a magnetohydrodynamics outreach demonstration that will illustrate how electromagnetic forces can drive fluid motion.
  • Thanks to the J. Douglas and Patricia Traxler Scholarship Fund, Mary Braza will work with Prof. Ray Ingersoll to study the tectonic evolution of southern California, specifically transrotation, by collecting and analyzing samples from the Topanga Formation.
  • The Donald Carlisle Undergrad Research Endowed Fund will make it possible for Alexandrea Arnold to work with Prof. Aradhna Tripati to analyze microfossils in sediment cores with the goal of understanding changes in the carbon cycle and past climate in the North Pacific over the past five million years.

Congratulations to these excellent students for such strong proposals!
