A 4000 km2 (1500 mi2) area centered on the Baker area in eastern California provides scattered exposures of enigmatic Mesozoic west-vergent, low-angle faults. The best evidence for the nature of this faulting is found in 3 locations, the Silurian Hills, Old Dad Mountain, and the Soda Mountains. The Baker area faulting is located in the hinterland of the east-vergent Sevier fold and thrust belt and the foreland of the similarly east-vergent Eastern California thrust zone. Evidence suggests the Baker area faulting was contemporaneous with the Sevier faulting. Importantly, the Silurian Hills area provides evidence that the allochthon in that area underwent extensional deformation during transport.
